GM's Christmas Message 2008

Season's greetings to all hash members here in Samoa as well as overseas. The holiday season is upon us again and the start of another year is right around the corner. This is a wonderful time of the year and I hope we don't get too carried away with the mechanics and logistics of everything and forget the enjoyment side. Please take time to enjoy the wonderful xmas music, the delightful xmas lights, the many parties where we can meet old friends and acquaintances. Please renew and treasure your friendships. It's one of the most precious gifts we can have in this world. That is one of the main reasons Hash means so much to me personally.

When I came to samoa 10 years ago, after being away for many years, I didn't know very many people. All my friends from when I was 17 years old have died, were in jail, or have been kidnapped by aliens. Then I joined Hash and I immediately had 20 friends to my name.

A year ago, Karaoke and I went to Australia and I ended up in the hospital emergency room. The doctors there said that I shouldn't even be alive, but by some miracle I made it through. When I got home I decided to celebrate my second chance at life, so I made a list of all my friends to invite to my back-from-the-dead party. When I looked at the list, 90% of them were hashers! That's when it hit me just how much hash means to me.

As I reflect upon 2008, I realize that in the hash world, a lot has happened. Here's a few highlights that I can think of from the top of my head.
  • Lewinsky and POD get married and Happy Feet joins the hash family
  • Jazz festival hosted by Hash which resulted in a monetary donation to FLO organization
  • Australian Navy Hash run that resulted in Kuini's hash name
  • Melborne Cup run and hat competition with the GM taking top honors for his outrageous helmet
  • Halloween run and costume competition with Tony Blair and Selina winning the top prize in their Robin Hood and maid Marion outfit.
  • Thanksgiving run and turkey dinner
  • Cinco De Mayo run
  • Shafter's untimely death and funeral
A quick glance back and a few new hash names jump up
If that's not the craziest bunch of names for hashers then I don't know what is.

I know there are a lot more events and incidences worthy of mention but my excuse is that I only took over as GM in July; before that my records are not too good. All the above mentioned highlights have been happy and joyous ones except for one. I'm sure you all know that as the untimely passing of our brother Shafter. As far as I can recall, this is the first time hash has been this heavily involved in a hash member funeral. This funeral was a little different in that from the very start, it was planned not so much as a cause for sadness and mourning but as a celebration of a well lived life. This event really brought the hash family closer together and it brought out the best in all of us.

For 2009, lets all look forward and help support these theme runs for the near future.

Jan. Australia Day and 1450 run

Feb. GM's birthday party run (age not important)

Mar. St. Patrick's day run (corn beef run)

Apr. Easter run

May Cinco De Mayo run (Mexican food run)

Jun. GM's farewell run (hooray!!)

One of my New Year's resolution is to be the best GM I can be. I will try my best to make hash not only a fun but also an exciting outing. I'm always open to new ideas and constructive critizisms (but not too many). I'm sure with your help and support we can all have lots of fun at hash. What do you say we make 2009 even better then 2008. I think I did mention it before but I'd like to repeat it here that the theme for my administration is "PARTY HARD OR GO HOME"

And if I haven't told you before I'm telling you now. THANK YOU to each and everyone of you for all you've done for hash in general and the GM in particular. I really didn't want the GM job because I didn't think a non-drinking and non-running hasher should be a GM. I took the job hoping you would support me but you have not only supported me but you have accepted me and for that I will always be grateful. A special thank you should be given here for my beautiful sidekick Karaoke for the unwavering support she has given me. Truth be told, I couldn't do half the stuff I've done without her help and support. (Karaoke, I'll drink from your shoe anytime!!)

Finally, I want to ask for your forgiveness. In the performance of my GM duties and in my efforts to improve hash, I know I probably offended or stepped on a few toes, maybe even all the toes at one time or another. Please know that none of my actions are ever intended to offend anyone. What do you say we bury the hatchet and start over again with the new year? Lets not look back to past indiscretions cause it will only give us a stiff neck. If you can forgive and forget, I give you a solemn promise as your GM that many many down downs will surely come your way!!

From the GM and the entire mismanagement crew, I want to wish all the hash family (especially our members who are overseas for the holidays or who have moved overseas) a very merry Christmas and a very happy New Year where ever you may be. May the force be with you!!

On On from the GM

PS: Please take care of yourselves this holiday season so that we can hash together again in 2009.

Remember: If you lose your fame and fortune, you've lost nothing
But if you lose your friends and your health, you've lost everything.

Christopher Alan York Hewson

Sunset – 11th November 2008

We are all travelers in the wilderness of the world, and the best that we can find in our travels is an honest friend. (Robert Louis Stevenson)
It is with heartfelt gratitude that we acknowledge our families and friends for your condolences and extension of sympathy for our family for the loss of our father, loving partner and a best friend to all the hashers; Christopher Alan York Hewson also known as Shafter or Drafter by old hashers.

Thank you for your prayers, condolences, messages of sympathy, your comforting company, your humor when at times we feel as if we are alone and assistance; be it financial or in kind; we thank you for your compassion and generosity.

We thank you especially for all the work, time and monetary contributions that you all put in to build his final resting place at Vailele Cemetery and to help us with his funeral arrangements. Please know that it has meant a lot to me and the family.

Faafetai, faafetai faafetai tele lava.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card; or sat quietly in a chair
Perhaps you sent a floral piece; if so we saw it there
Perhaps you spoke; the kindest words as any friend could say
Perhaps you were not there at all; just thought of us that day
Whatever you did to console our hearts
We thank you so much; whatever the part.
We are now back in Auckland and we look forward to seeing you all next time.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and may we also take this opportunity to wish you all hash men and meres of the Apia Hash House Harriers back home and overseas a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2009.

Shafter's Day - Hash Run 1440

17 November 2008 – Shafter was bid farewell on Monday in what Godfather described as a memorial “befitting a king.” Take a look for yourself. We have described Shafter’s day / Hash Run #1440 via more than 100 photos with detailed captions. Please click here to view the photo album. It includes Shafter's Memorial Service, Burial Service, and Hash Run. Nearly all Hashers contributed to making this day a special one. Shafter would be proud.

Many thanks to Flo and Shafter’s family. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with you.

Donations for Shafter's Memorial

There have been a few questions regarding how Hashers can help with Shafter's Memorial. At this point, the best way is to attend and participate in the Memorial (see this post). If you can't make it or would like to do more, please donate a little to help with Hash's expenses for Shafter's Memorial. Every little donation really helps. On On.

Shafter Farewell Hash Run 1440 - 17 Nov 08

Hash Run #1440 will be held at the Yacht Club immediately following Shafter's burial service at the Vailele Cemetery.

The run will start EARLY. Our best guess is that it will start at about 3PM.

This is a very special Hash Run where we will bid our long time Hasher, Hash Monk, and GM Shafter (Drafter) farewell. Please make an effort to join us for Shafter's final Hash Run.

Mismanagement and the Shafter family encourages Hashers to attend Shafter's services held earlier in the day (see previous post for details).

Shafter's Memorial Service - 17 Nov 08

Just received confirmation from the GM Eveready last night. Hash's participation in Shafter's memorial services are set. Here's the current plan:
  • The GM, Eveready (752-3338) is Hash's point of contact with Shafter's family.
  • Shafter's service will be held on Mon 17 Nov 08.
  • The schedule:

(followed by) Burial Service @ Vailele Cemetery
(followed by) Hash Run 1440 @ Yacht Club

  • Hash dress for the services is black and white.

Homework - International Hash Hymn

As per his family's request, the Apia Hash House Harriers will be bidding Shafter farewell the way Shafter lived, in his style, singing the International Hash Hymn; gestures and all.

Your homework, is to learn the song so that we can properly bid our good friend Shafter goodbye at his service on Monday.

International Hash Hymn
(Melody - Swing Low, Sweet Chariot)

Chorus:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

Verse 1:
I looked over Jordan and what did I see,
Coming for to carry me home,
A band of angels coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.

(Chorus)

Verse 2:
If you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends that I'm coming too,
Coming for to carry me home.

(Chorus x 2)

R.I.P. Shafter

Talofa AHHH,
As most of you are aware, our beloved Shafter / GM / Hash Monk passed away last night at his home in Vaoala. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of sorrow. We will keep AHHH members posted as to what AHHH will do to help with the funeral.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Shafter, you will be sorely missed.

Halloween Hash Trash

Halloween Hash Trash- 27-10-08

The Halloween hash run turned out to be quite a night to remember. From the outrageous costumes to the numerous down downs, to the hash Monk turning up and even a naming ceremony. This run had it all!

Pussy snapper obviously set out early to set the run, and just the thought of him setting the run must have turned away our usual runners. It was an abysmal turnout of runners. From memory, and I’m trying very hard to remember what happened last night, only 5 runners completed the run!
It was a good run with a mix of road, dirt, bush, and mountains…Some hashers found it tough treading through the jungle as God Father tried to live up to his Halloween character which was a ghost and took a heavy spill heading downhill through the jungle. I think he was trying to fly down and take a short cut.

There were some interesting characters at the Halloween has run, from Robin Hood, and his Princess, to Pirates, army men, fairy’s, hares, and even a sailor! (skananavian, living up to her hash name) and Zoro and his fair lady were present too…

The GM had his share of fun punishing the hashers with Down Downs. Tony Blair took one for trying to make the GM look silly in his costume by offering him a light saber as his sword..Ive never seen Zorro with a light Saber..and it makes me wonder why TB has a light saber to start with.
SOTB and Poumuli copped a down down each for wearing a “uniform” rather than a costume…as did those that did not wear any costumes. BB got a down down for lying to the GM, saying she did the run with Godfather when she was never seen on the run to start with..sneaky sneaky..
TB got another down down for false information..
At the end of the awards, the Hash Judges for the best dressed came with their results. First was Tony Blair and Selena, (Robin hood and his Princess) second was Zorro and his fair lady, and Third was BB, dressed as Cat Woman (Like Halle Berry, except with out the “Berry”..nice call AC/DC)

The Hash Monk also made a brief appearance where COT’s new half helped co-host the run. He was given a very appropriate hash name, considering he is a sea man, loves the ocean, loves sea creatures, and from what the Hash Monk was told, there was some fun over the weekend…He was therefore named kui kui..which for those of you who don’t know what it is…it’s a sea urchin, and when you translate that into English, it means pokey pokey..apparently something else that he likes…

There was a great spread put on for the hash mob, so big thanks to Crown of Thorns, Kui Kui, and new flat mate Alex for a great Halloween Run. For those of you that did not turn up or did not wear a costume, you have next weeks run to redeem yourselves by wearing a nice big Melbourne Cup Day run HAT!..those that do not will feel the wrath of the GM…

PROXY nomination for Mr Celebrity

Hash spies have noted a certain Hasher making a brief appearance on national TV in Australia last week. Appearing as the usual monkey that he is, he was climbing a coconut tree to impress host, Catrina Roundtree. Allegedly, "Getaway is Australia's longest-running and most popular holiday and travel program", that would have been watch by over a million Aussies last week.

Halloween Hash on 27 OCT 08

Hash Joke 10-10-08

Hey Folks, here's something to make you laugh before the long weekend.

It's Saturday morning and Bob's just about to set off on a round of golf, when he realizes that he forgot to tell his wife that the guy who fixes the washing machine is coming around at noon. So Bob heads back to the clubhouse and phones home.

"Hello?" says a little girl's voice.

"Hi, honey, it's Daddy," says Bob. "Is Mommy near the phone?"

"No, Daddy. She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Frank."

After a brief pause, Bob says, "But you haven't got an Uncle Frank, honey!"

"Yes, I do, and he's upstairs in the bedroom with Mommy!"

"Okay, then. Here's what I want you do. Put down the phone, run upstairs and knock on the bedroom door and shout in to Mommy and Uncle Frank that my car's just pulled up outside the house."

"Okay, Daddy!" A few minutes later, the little girl comes back to the phone. "Well, I did what you said, Daddy."

"And what happened?"

"Well, Mommy jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran around screaming, then she tripped over the rug and went out the front window and now she's all dead."

"Oh, my God! What about Uncle Frank?"

"He jumped out of bed with no clothes on too, and he was all scared and he jumped out the back window into the swimming pool. But he must have forgot that last week you took out all the water to clean it, so he hit the bottom of the swimming pool and now he's dead too."

There is a long pause.

"Swimming pool? Is this 854-7039?"

It was raining Monday afternoon. Fortunately, there was only a light rain before and during the run. This scared away a number of Hashers (pansies). But the diehards were there. Even more, we had Tramp and Woman in Black visiting from Rome. It was great to see them. More, Einstein returned to enjoy the night too… but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The run was a classic jungle crawl. A fair number of falsies early in the run threw the leaders off-track. One of them took us nearly 10 minutes to figure out. Thankfully, Underrated and Snake found the sneaky paper hidden off the road in the bush. From there we entered a big cow pasture. And yes, with the rain, we soon found ourselves ankle deep in you know what. Thank goodness there were no new boots! We did the traditional crawl, trudged through the mud and cow pies, climbed over some rocks, and went along and under some barbed wired fences. Richard did a ninja dive during the run. Not to be left-out, Woman in Black did a super ninja roll too while diving through a fence! But all good things must come to an end. It was getting dark, and the Grandmaster ordered the troops to head home. On the way home, the rain hit. By the time we were back, we were wet rats. After toweling off, we grabbed some nuts, and started hitting the keg.

Things got a bit cozy. We all tucked into the garage as the rain poured. The keg was great - an excellent brew. Many of us were spending time catching-up with Tramp, Woman in Black, and Einstein before the awards. AC/DC hit the BBQ. Tony Blair got the mugs ready. Mr. Whippy poured the beers. The hosts for tonight Bits & Pieces, Goer, and their daughter (spaced the name!) were well prepared and doing all the little things you do when you host a run.

Well, after a good social, it was time for the Hash Circle. The GM dished-out the standard awards for Retreads and what not. He had a long list. It's safe to say, that everyone in the circle got hit. But that was not enough. The Hash Monk stormed the circle with a flash of orange smoke. After recovering from the choking smoke, the circle resumed. The Monk called out Bits & Pieces and Goer's daughter for naming. The monk covered her hair with the flour, some beer, and who knows what. He also prepared some strange orange liquor concoction. He handed the Hash mere a glass, announced that she will hereby be known as Blooming Luscious, we sang, and Blooming Luscious tried to drink the wicked brew. Several Hashers tried to help. After a sip each, they handed the glass to other brave/stupid Hashers to help. The Monk then went after many, Snake for being Snake, Mr. Whippy a double for blogging about the Monk (who thankfully had Tramp help for the save), and Eveready and Fang (for ???). In between, the mad Monk was taking shots of his own brew! In case you haven't guessed it yet, this brew was killer. At this point your poor substitute for a scribe, Mr. Whippy was too liquored-up to remember the details; just vaguely remember the inability to say "statistics," and repeatedly trying to knock over an empty bucket.

It was a great Hash. The Hash Monk was mean. The run was tough. The beer was cold. And the company was great. Check out the run's photos in our Hash Photo Albums.

On On! Mr. Whippy.

Hash Monk Alert!

Beware Hashers.

After several beers Friday night at Headquarters #1, a few of us Hashers were assaulted with visions of the Hash Monk from long ago... yah, the bad one. This can only mean one thing: The Monk plans on disrupting the Hash Circle soon; perhaps even tomorrow. This brings back haunting memories of drinking from the gum boot, ruthless down-downs, and pure madness. This particular Monk, is the worst kind. A vengeful spirit that spares no one. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Mr. Whippy.

Hash Joke For the week

A blonde heard that milk baths would make her more beautiful, so she left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk.

When the milkman read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door to clarify the point.

The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, "I found your Note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 1.5 gallons?" The blonde said, "I want 15 gallons of milk. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath".

The milkman asked, "Do you want it pasteurized?"

The blonde said, "No, just up to my boobs."

Hash Run - Mon 22 Sep 08 (Tony Blair & Selena)

Talofa Hashers,

Next weeks run will be hosted by Tony Blair and Selena from their home in Tuaefu. For those of you who dont know where that is, check the map that is attached to this post. Be prepared to enter some exciting terrain and make sure to bring a change of clothes..and maybe even a flash light. This has always proven to be one of the best locations to have a hash run, so lets see some numbers and harden up, nothing like a light drizzle to cool you down on the run.

Godfather Rallies Charity Shaving

Talofa ALL HASHMEN AND MERES,

Thank you to ACDC and all for the enjoyable Hash on Monday. It never ceases to impress me how such a small number can make 'quick shift' of a 50. Amazing!

I am in favor of a AHHH Donation towards 'The Shave Your Head' campaign for such a worthy cause. The amount should be 'what we can afford' from the coffers although if Mismanagement were to consider an amount in excess of what is available then I am sure many of us coming to the next Hash can 'bolster' the numbers to a meaningful level.

The 'side show' that Lezzie, ACDC, FBI, SOB and RC are promoting involving Mustang Sally and possibly other Meres could well be an INTERESTING way of bolstering Hash $ Numbers for such a good cause.

Remember that, the ol'man might be limping these days and partly blind in one eye but I can still lend a hand as a QUALITY CONTROLLER with the use of a Magnifying Glass!

Enjoy life while you have it, with good health of course from the Hash.

Godfather.

Hash Trash for 15 Sep 08

The hash run was in Vaivase and boy what a run (not that I ran) but the On Ons after the run was one to remember (although I don’t remember too much). Because of the poor turnout (apparently due to the rain) there were only a handful of hashers and a mighty big keg to drink. Needless to say, the down down count went through the roof. In saying that, congrats to all the hashers that made an effort to come last night, the keg was uma lava pisupo! The hosts put on quite a spread considering the numbers, but thanks again to our hosts for last nights run.

There were some interesting down downs lastnight, Kareoke got a couple for having weak knees after a week in Hawaii with the GM, she had to use Godfathers car as support all night…Kiwi had a few telephonis interuptus down downs as some random lady kept calling his number..scandal if you ask me..Delicious took a few for not being able to control her younger half while the GM was away. Skananavian aka skanky, copped her share of down downs for abandoning her fellow hash meres and coming home at some odd hour of the morning (she says she was at home, just not hers.he he he) we also had some of Mustangs cousins from Australia, obviously bitter about the loss to the AB’s, but boy could they drink. Impressive! Cisco had his share of down downs for being a retard..oops, I mean retread, and for a whole lot of other things that I cant remember (too much at HQ)

Every Hasher had their share of the nectar of life as there was so much to go around, and all those that were trying their best to hide and avoid it were singled out and handed a drink for their efforts…again, thanks to the Hosts and all the hashers that made an effort to turn up regardless of the weather. For all those who didn’t make it, its hash, we run whether its raining, blowing a gale or snowing..hopefully next week we’ll have a good turn out.

Sorry if I forgot to add anything else, my memory is on blank street after HQ last night.

On on!

New Hashman "Never Drunk That Much Beer"

Was perusing the stat's for our blog (yah, I'm a geek) and guess what? I found a fantastic blog by one of our new Hashmen! He has a boatload of great photos and even a little Trash for the 25 AUG & 1 SEP runs. My favorite quote, "Funny thing is, I have never drunk that much beer..." We must be doing something right!

His and his wife's story is a great example of what makes stays in Samoa so memorable. All you need is an adventurous spirit, a smile, and a little Vailima.
